Gaslight at the Stoneham Theatre
By Patrick Hamilton & Directed by Weylin Symes
May 27—June 13, 2010
Bella Manningham worries that her husband may be right when he says she’s going mad. But on one eventful night, a mysterious stranger arrives and Bella begins to understand the truth behind the disappearing pictures, mysteriously dimming lights and haunting footsteps from above. Immortalized in a 1944 film treatment starring Ingrid Bergman, Patrick Hamilton’s chamber mystery is a twisty and twisted portrait of a late Victorian London marriage.

New England Trade featured in Boston Business Journal
Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Cash-strapped businesses increasingly are trading goods and services for everything from newspaper ads to exterminators to lobster dinners.Well beyond the days of swapping one goat for 30 chickens, business-to-business barter has gained fresh cachet during a recession marked by dried-up credit markets and slumping sales across most industries.
Barter has become a popular option for companies looking to unload inventory, boost the customer base and conserve cash.
“If a business understands the basics of barter, it is a means to have a competitive edge,” said Ken Meharg, CEO of business-to-business barter company New England Trade Inc. in Malden. “Barter can move excess inventory, generate sales and increase cash flow.”

Bartering Booms As Business Owners Get Creative
Wednesday, March 25th, 2009![]()
From swapping baseball cards to trading the island of Manhattan for beads, bartering is an age old way of making deals without cash. In a down economy, bartering is making a huge comeback. It’s a way to get things you want and build your business at the same time.
It’s a wide open market,” says Ken Meharg who runs New England Trade, a formal business-to-business bargain exchange in Malden. Unlike individuals who trade goods or services one-on-one, in New England Trade, you accumulate points when someone uses your service and you can spend those points with any other business in the exchange, not just the one that used your services. Cape Cod Trade brings creative currency to Cape Cod
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
Perhaps “cash is king”, but barter is an attractive alternative. Given the cash flow challenges associated with the current economic rut, the newly launched Cape Cod Trade is finding a warm reception from regional business owners. The new venture is affiliated with New England Trade, based in Malden, Mass. and the region’s oldest, largest barter/trade organization, with over 28 years of helping businesses move products and services.
Larry Conn, Hyannis resident and Cape Cod Trade managing partner noted, “Organized barter is a legitimate way to bring new avenues of business to your door and expand your local networking value. At the same time the barter income can help defray your incidental expenses, provide a source of employee bonuses and incentives, augment your health coverage, and perhaps afford you some small luxuries.”
“Cape Cod has always been a haven for entrepreneurs and business people with ambition and energy,” noted Ken Meharg, CEO of Cape Cod Trade and New England Trade.
Gary Oshry, President of New England Traded added, “From the tourist industry to professional services to manufacturing, Cape Codders have a wide base for profiting from exchanging goods and services.”
Bartering surges in recession as businesses and individuals look to cut costs
Friday, March 20th, 2009
Amid the current recession, bartering is booming as businesses and individuals look for ways to cut costs by dealing in goods and services instead of cash. One Massachusetts exchange has seen transactions surge by more than 30 percent. “When recession looms, barter booms,” said Ken Meharg, whose company has more than 1,000 members from the North Shore to Cape Cod. “In a bad economy, for those that understand barter, it will help them weather the storm. Everybody is used to ‘cash is king’ but barter is the next best thing.”
Meharg said members in his company’s network use “trade dollars” to purchase services within the exchange’s network, and some give out bonuses – in “trade dollars” – to employees. For example, a car dealership member gave employees barter dollars, which could be used for services at a dentist in the exchange network, because the dealership didn’t offer dental insurance.
“I think business owners have to rethink, retool and get back to basics,” Meharg said. “Barter is certainly one of those basics.”
9 Billion Dollar Barter Deal
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008The Democratic Republic of Congo is trading with a massive state-owned firm based in Beijing, the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC). They’re planning a new road which will be the first endeavor of the biggest single deal China’s ever done in Africa, worth $9 billion.
Due to be signed in Beijing shortly, it gives DR Congo $6 billion of desperately needed infrastructure — about 2,400 miles of road, 2,000 miles of railway, 32 hospitals, 145 health centers, and two universities.
In return, China gets a slice of DR Congo’s precious natural resources to feed its booming industries — 10 million tons of copper and 400,000 tons of cobalt. It’s a barter deal, what the Chinese side loves to call “win-win.” Not aid with strings attached, like Western powers have given DR Congo over the years, but pure business.
